Marathon Tips - from an expert (not me)

Some good tips from a person who seems to know what she’s talking about…

Just a super brief post for me today.

I know a lot of you are training for a marathon, many for the first time like me. This is now a favorite page in my de.li cious profile! I’m sure I’ll refer to it often!

4 Last-Minute Marathon Tips for First-Timers

Who's training for a marathon? Who's training for their first marathon? Who else is doing Chicago?

10 random questions

There’s a lot you can learn from someone in just 10 questions. Thanks to That Pink Girl, here is a non-running, non-workout, non-health related post! Enjoy!

What was your high school superlative? If you didn't have one, what would it have been? Stilts. It came from a friendly game of bowling with some of my guys friends. They were coming up with some “fun” (aka – inappropriate nicknames…think 17 year old males! Ha!) for me to put on the bowling screen…I wasn’t thrilled, so they gave me stilts. Stilts derived from the time I stood next to my 6’ 2” friend and realized our hips were at the same level (I’m 5’8”).

What sports did you play in high school? None in high school. I played soccer and basketball growing up. Starting running and boxing after I graduated from college.

What was the best part about your wedding? I’m currently planning it now. I’m getting married in April 2011. My favorite part so far is being able to say I’m engaged! I’ve been with my fiancé for over 4 years and am so excited that we are officially going to become official! I HOPE my favorite part of the actual day is how I feel. I have a feeling it’s going to be a blast! I want everyone to have fun and celebrate our love! :)

What's your last meal? Appetizer, Soup, Salad, Entree, Dessert - Well, I’m doing the mini meal plan, soooo it was meal #1. Turkey bacon, whole wheat English muffin, tomatoes, and a latte.

What song is your guilty pleasure? “Your Love is My Drug” by Ke$ha. With an iPod full of AC/DC, Beatles, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Etta James, Frank Sinatra…I enjoy “good” music. Music now-a-days for the most part is NOT good, but for some reason I LOVE that song!

What is your favorite professional sports team and why do you like them? PHOENIX SUNS!!!! I love them because I love them. I eat, breathe, sleep, the Suns! Love them so much, our wedding colors will be purple and orange. My fiancé and I had our first date at a Suns game.

What is your favorite reality show and why do you like it?
As I learned in my Sports Media classes in college (yes, I’m a sports obsessed nut!) Sports were the original reality show, so there you have it. Sporting events are my favorite reality show, and ONLY reality shows I watch. (other than the occasional “Say ‘Yes’ to the Dress”)

How would you classify your home decorating style? Hmmm…each room is different. The guest bedroom is classic elegance, the master bedroom is modern, the living room is a mix of contemporary and classic (seeing how all our furniture at this point are hand-me-downs!).

Deep dish pizza or thin crust? Red or white sauce? What toppings? New York Style! Thin crust, red sauce, only cheese! YUM!

Favorite weekend getaway within a 2 hour drive. From Austin, TX…I’d say Gruene, TX! If you’ve never been, I suggest going!

Week 1, day 1...great success!

(I really hope you read that "great success" Borat style!)

Day 1 of the 6 week challenge…done!

It was a good day (yesterday). I did a very short run (slightly de-hydrated, I wasn’t ready for the heat + humidity…guess it’s SUMMER!!!). Then I did about 20 minutes of core*, and day 1 of the 100 push-up challenge.

Not only that, but I was very successful with my mini meals:
  • Meal #1 – turkey bacon, whole wheat English muffin, tomato, latte
  • Meal #2 – half turkey/cheese/tomato sammich, bowl of strawberries & pineapples
  • Meal #3 - half turkey/cheese/tomato sammich, ½ bowl of strawberries & pineapples, no sugar added apple sauce
  • Meal #4 – bowl of honey nut cheerios
  • Meal #5 – homemade BBQ Chicken, broccoli & beer

Since I’m an uber nerd and LOVE spreadsheets, I’m creating a spreadsheet of my lovely little plan. This will help me track exactly what I’ve been doing so I can effectively measure my results! (told you I was an uber nerd!) Once I have that ready, I’ll post it here in case any of you are interested! ---> see over there (well, on the side, and up a little)? Where is says "Work It Girl" that's where it will go! :)

*- Last time I posted about my core workout, I had some people ask me what exactly it entailed since it kicked my ass so bad. Ass kicking = results…right? Well I’m working on that post. You should expect it in the next week or so! In the mean time, just make sure you do lots of planks (or bitch-planks as a friend and I call ‘em…those little bitches!)

So day 2 of the 6 week challenge will include: more mini meals, a longer run (hydrating!), and core. Since the 100 push-up challenge only calls for 3 days a week, I’m going to do that Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

Now, if only I could stop sneezing…my abs and ribs wouldn’t hurt so much!

6 week challenge

I work well with goals. I work well with challenges. I'm very competitive and a bit obsessive. (For those who know me personally, you just realized that I described myself to a T!)

So, in order to kick my own ass back into gear, I'm challenging myself for the next 6 weeks! I was going to make it a 4 week challenge, until That Pink Girl tweeted about the 100 push-up challenge. What?! A challenge? I must learn more... Basically it's a 6 week challenge that in end of the 6 weeks you'll be able to do 100 consecutive push-ups. Badass! ....hence the (now) 6 week challenge.

The challenge?
  • No eating out for breakfast or lunch at work (save money and calories)
  • Eat 5-6 mini meals every day
  • Run 4 days a week
  • Ab work out (from my boxing days*) 6+ days a week
  • 100 push-up challenge (website)
Start date: Monday, May 10
End date: Sunday, June 20

Here's to the next 6 weeks!

*- About boxing. I've decided after Chicago, I'm going back to the sport. I miss it too much. Gotta get into fightin' shape! ;)
