Losing too fast?!


Today was a weigh in day.  Since I do Weight Watchers online, I just weigh myself first thing in the morning on Thursdays.  I stepped on the scale and saw yet another 2lbs gone.  Two pounds…in one week!  Again!

WW says that on average people lose between 1 and 2 pounds a week.  To me, that says that some people lose more than 2 pounds a week.

I officially reached my short term goal of 10% lost (I’m about 11% down now).  That’s so crazy to think about.  I am literally (more than) 10% smaller than I was just 14 weeks ago.  Take me and just shrink me by 90%.  WOW!

After I put that number into my little WW iPhone app it did the "Congratulations you’ve lost 2lbs and reached your short term 10% goal!” and proceeded to tell me that I’m losing weight too quickly.  They said that while losing 2lbs a week is ok, averaging that for 4 weeks is to fast.

Say whaaaa?!

Since this is a long term thing.  I’m not losing to get into a wedding dress, bikini, high school reunion, or anything like that.  I’m losing the weight because it’s time, I’m ready, I’m committed, and I will keep up with my goal weight FOR LIFE.  Because of all that, I’m not looking for a quick fix.  That’s why I’m not crash dieting, taking pills, fasting…nothing like that.  I’m losing by working my ass off in heat + humidity and eating healthfully.   When I hear: “you’re losing weight to quickly” – to me that means “You won’t be able to maintain this and you’ll gain it all back”.

So, I took a step back and looked at what I’ve been doing over the last month.

I’m not hungry.  Ever.  When I am hungry, I eat.  In between meals, if I’m hungry, I usually cherries or carrots or some other kind of veggie.  Sometimes I reach for chips or popcorn, but usually fruit or veggies.  I use my daily points every day and usually dip into my weekly points every week, but I almost always have weekly points left (that disappear if they aren’t used).

I am working out 3 days a week for an hour each day.  Sure they are really hard as hell workouts, but I’m burning fat and toning muscle.  My trainer is certified and he knows my goals.  I’m not doing anything wrong there.

I just went to the nutritionist last Thursday.  She did a body comp.  The results yielding what I was hoping for: all the weight I’ve lost has been fat.  Not a single once of muscle was gone.  To me, that means I have the perfect diet/exercise ratio.

So – what I’ve gathered from this is: keep doing what I’m doing! I think some people on WW still don’t get it.  They don’t understand that this is a lifelong thing (like with any “diet”).  They start starving themselves and not using all their points.  And those people should be warned to either eat differently or stop losing so fast because it’s not sustainable.  At this point, the only way I could slow down is if I stop working out or eating when I’m not hungry – neither of which are healthy.

That’s my plan.  Just keep doing what I’m doing.  PS – I just bought a size 8 for the first time – EVER!  I wasn’t even an 8 in high school.  Smallest I’ve ever been as an adult is a 10.  Looks like a 6 or 4 is totally attainable!  Can’t believe I just wrote that down.  It’s exciting!

  1. Congrats! You are doing great. It sounds like you are doing it right, but like me (who is ruled by a number on the scale from a recent post) I think you need to know what you're doing is right FOR YOU and not anyone else... that's what an app can't tell you! Keep it up, my friend!
