I Work Out - Cardio (video)

Totally thought of LMFAO's I'm Sexy and I Know it, when I wrote this title.  
Reality check: wanna be sexy? Gotta work out. 

So, I was talking with a friend from high school who was curious how I'm losing the weight.  I shared my story about Weight Watchers and working out.  And then she asked, "I gotta ask though, your work out schedule. Does it take you a few hours a day?"

The short answer to that: No, it doesn't take hours a day.  But rather multiple times a week.

You know, I never really thought about it, but a lot of people have no idea what I do to work out.  You hear: core, trainer, run, cardiocalisthenics, bootcamp, and so on, but I've never actually explained it in detail.  

So - I had an idea.  

Let's video tape me working out! 


God help us all.  It will be great!

Immediately after I thought this, I said to me: 
Self, we need to go shopping, you have NO matching workout clothes, and you cannot have these people seeing you in your crumby non-matching workout outfits. 

Yes, friends, that was my initial thought after deciding to video tape my crazy ass self.

Well, I haven't gone shopping yet, so you're going to have to just deal. 

My next thought: I probably look super hot ridiculous while working out.  

But, don't well all?

Today, I'm talking about cardio.

I have an entire series planned out and hope that I can post a new video each week.  But don't get your panties all up in a bunch be sad if it's longer than a week before each video.

No?  Well - you should, because I'm not a professional, I'm just a girl who finally figured out what works for me.

So - cardio...

I'm sure you've met people who say "If you're not going to do at least 45 minutes of cardio, 4 days a week, there is no point in working out."

Well, screw them, they aren't entirely correct, in my valuable unprofessional opinion.

According to this article, it is recommended that adults get 30 minutes of moderate cardio five times per week, or 20 minutes of intense cardio three times per week.  

The way I view it, you have to start somewhere.  And realistically, you aren't going to go from not working out, to running for 30 minutes right off the bat.  That's hard to do.  And you should not feel discouraged if you can't do that right now.

I always mix free weights and/or core with my cardio.  But, you don't have to.  I'm working out to get healthy skinny* (DO NOT JUMP ON MY BACK FOR THAT "S" WORD - view my word key on the side of this site) so I need to add more flava muscle toning exercises to my routine.

I'm finally in the "average" weight range for my height, but I don't want to be average.  I want to be fine as hell! And it's a fact, muscle helps burn fat.  So I'm toning my muscle.  Plus, toned muscles on ladies is super sexy.  Don't argue, haters.  You know it is.

I digress, as usual...

So, once again, for cardio...I do this

Since it's unbearable outside hot, I run on a treadmill.  But I always recommend outdoors if it's doable.

I warm up at a fast walk for 2 minutes.

Run 10 minutes or 1 mile all out* (whichever is longer).
If you can't run an entire mile, do not get down on yourself.  I couldn't either.  It's hard.  Just run for 1 minute, walk for 30 seconds, and repeat for 1 mile.  Each time you do it, run a little longer and BAM you'll be at 1 mile in no time.  I promise.

Cool down for 2 minutes.

Then comes the fun part.

Walk backwards, side shuffle right side, side shuffle left side for 1.5 minutes each.

Repeat 2 to 3 times.

What the ef is a side shuffle and how do you do it on a treadmill without killing yourself?  Que: super sexy workout video of yours truly.

Yes - I'm working on a higher quality video camera. My Flip Camera ran out of juice and I don't want to use my DSLR for this, so I used hubby's iPhone.  I think Blogger compresses it.  Will research.

So, clearly, I think my husband's iPhone can hear me...
What I'm saying is: This is the side shuffle and this is how you do it without killing yourself.  Keep your feet pointing straight ahead.  Make sure you do not point them in the direction you're moving (you won't use the targeted muscle group if you don't have your feet pointed straight ahead).  Note: this can be done without a treadmill, and it is too easy to point your feet the wrong direction when you're doing it on solid ground, so be extra careful with that.

This works your saddlebags inner/outer thighs.  PS, I used to have saddle bags, I don't anymore.  So, yes, I know what ef I'm talking about, this works, in my unprofessional opinion.

BOOM - there is your 20-30 minutes of cardio.  I do this 5 times a week, followed by free weights and/or core.  Which will come at a later date, when I get my ass self in front of a camera again.  For beginners, I'd start with 3 to 4 times a week until you build your stamina.  Just recently started working out 6 days a week, so you don't want to over do it.  Or maybe you do...  Up to you.
